The Only Ever ‘Wing Chun Master’ To Take A Fight in the UFC

The pages of history have thrown up a classic matchup from the early stages of the UFC. A mere sliver of the competition’s current success.

The early days of UFC were billed as a ‘no-holds-barred’ competition that pitted vastly different styles against one another to find out which was best.

It was a bit like trying to find out who would win between a great white shark or a saltwater crocodile. But the early popularity paved the way for the success of the current form of the UFC enjoys.

So in UFC 5, a “Wing Chun Master” by the name of Asbel Cancio graced the cage, matching up against acclaimed Ametuer Judo legend, ‘Dangerous’ Dave Beneteau.

The Canadian would later go on to quit the UFC to become a lawyer. He was admitted to the bar in 2003 and gained his Masters of Laws in 2015.

The fight, overseen by Big John McCarthy was one-sided, to say the least.

From the opening bell, Beneteau went on the offensive, executing a superb low-takedown to open the heavyweight event.

From there, he easily attained a top-mount and dominated Cancio with a brutal ground and pound.

The crowd was loving it and McCarthy arguably let things go on a bit too long. Eventually, Cancio’s corner threw in the town and it was all over.

Following the victory, Beneteau paraded around the cage hoisting the Canadian flag over his head to rapturous applause from the crowd. Beneteau would go on to enjoy a less-than-stellar 6-5-1 record in professional MMA lasting until 2001.

It would prove to be Asbel Cancio’s only appearance in any form of professional fighting, leaving more questions than answers about his qualification as a fighter.
